The archive comprises a treasure trove of handwritten documents by the engineer Maxime Laubeuf, who designed the Narval, France’s first combat submarine. They reveal the ingenuity of a man who gave sterling service to the French state, before going on to serve a then-booming private industry with equal distinction.
Maxime Laubeuf is also an important symbol for the Académie de Marine, which performs the dual role of maintaining high-level studies in naval specialisms, and supporting France’s position as a major maritime power.
The Laubeuf Archives will be conserved by the Académie de Marine in collaboration with the Historical Department of the French Ministry of Defence.
